According to NCSL, idling - running a vehicle’s engine while it is stationary - wastes an estimated 6 billion gallons of fuel into the air each year. Exhaust fumes from vehicles have been linked to asthma, cancer, cardiac disease and other serious health risks, particularly in vulnerable populations. Many states limit vehicle idling to between three and five minutes for most vehicles. Massachusetts General Law (MGL) states that “No person shall cause, suffer, allow or permit the unnecessary operation of the engine of a motor vehicle while said vehicle is stopped for a foreseeable period of time in excess of five minutes”.

At work zones, maintenance vehicles often have the warning strobes on. Unless using generators which also pollute the air, vehicles need to leave the engine on to power up the warning signals.
